Literacy Basketball

Hello Grade 2's,

The internet is full of fun and exciting games! As I was searching I came across a website called Internet 4 Classrooms. This website has a variety of Language Arts skill builder activities and games to play online. Specifically since we are covering sentence structure in class, this game called The Patchwork Game is a great way to get some practice by arranging the words in the correct order to make a proper sentence.

Parents,

In class we have been focusing on students rereading their writing out loud to make sure it makes sense. We have also begun teaching students to edit other students work in the classroom. Research has suggested that students who have the experience of peer editing have a better likelihood of creating better writing pieces.

This unit on sentence structure aligns with the Ontario Language Arts expectation 3.5 which states that by the end of grade 2 students will use parts of speech appropriately to communicate their meaning clearly, with a focus on the use of: proper nouns; adjectives; verbs; and simple prepositions. Also in alignment with our unit is expectation 3.6 which states that by the end of grade 2 students will proofread and correct their writing using a simple checklist or a few guiding questions such as does each sentence make sense?

Jet Ski Addition

Hello Grade 2's,

I was searching the internet for some fun games to play and I came across this website called Academic Skill Builder. This website has fun and exciting racing games featuring multiplayer learning games, math games, language arts games and much more!

There is this specific game called Jet Ski Addition where you can play by yourself or with other students from around the world. Use metal math to make it to the end and win against your opponents.

Parents,

This is a fun and simple game your child can play and enjoy. This online game helps to reinforce simple mental math skills such as 4+4 or 9+8. According to the Ontario Curriculum, this game helps students "solve problems involving the addition of whole numbers to 18, using a variety of mental strategies," for example, to add 6+8, students could double 6 and get 12 and then add 2 more to get 14.
